FAITH FORWARD FRIDAY: LOVE, PASSION, POETRY & BLACK HISTORY MONTH

I love February. It is the month that holds Valentine's Day--my FAVORITE holiday. It is also Black History Month. So in thinking about all my passions and how to share them all. I decided I am going to spend the month posting poetry that I like and most of it will be by Black People. Sometimes I will have a commentary and sometimes the poem will stand alone. I know this is ambitious but I think I can make it work. I am feeling in the mood for love.

Never love with all your heart,
It only ends in aching;
And bit by bit to the smallest part
That organ will be breaking.
Never love with all your mind,
It only ends in fretting;
In musings on sweet joys behind,
Too poignant for forgetting.
Never love with all your soul,
For such there is no ending,
Though a mind frets may find control,
And a shattered heart find mending.
Give but a grain of the heart's rich seed,
Confine some under cover,
And when love goes, bid him God-speed.
And find another love.

Not loving hard makes for selling yourself short. We only get one life, live and love to the fullest.

Optimistic, but I'm certain that's easier said than done.

Mega Rich,
I think you are right. But I also think Countee Cullen is right too. There is a duality to love/love lost/love found.

countee cullen was such a genius

i agree with his assertion that you should never love with all your heart mind and soul

think it's impossible anyway

that sounds like an addiction more than love

sounds like the addiction to crack or something

James,
I do think there is something to be said for giving love all your best. Putting forth you best effort with gusto. I think we don't do enough of that with each other in our live affairs.

Cullen writes beautifully, but he is wrong. If you know yourself and love yourself, then you can find the freedom in loving other people. I heard someone say that when you FALL in love you're gonna at least get a scrape. When you walk into love, with eyes open, you can see the love and your lover for who they really are. Sorry Babz, come to think of it, I hate this poem.

Dearest Jennifer,

I don't hate it. becasue it Countee Cullen. But I am very removed from it. This is not how I want to approach love. But I can see if how less actualized folks can latch onto this and make it their mantra.
