MUSIC...TAGGED YOUR IT!

My blog Sister Mizrepresent was tagged. You know, asked to tell 7 things about herself. Well this particular tag is about music. So I lifted it from her blog as inspiration for me today!

Here goes:
"List seven ( I am choosing 10) songs that you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to." Note: I am not tagging anyone...if you drop in consider yourself tagged and go and do this on your blog and let me know if you do!

1. Carol King, So Far Away
2. Alicia Keys, Like You"ll Never See Me Again.
3. Jill Scott, All I.
4. Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan, Everlasting Love
5. Mary J. Blige, Grown Woman
6. Angela Bofill, What I Wouldn't Do For The Love Of You
7. Brenda Russell, If Only For One Night
8. Wynton Marsalis, Resolution Of Romance, the entire CD
9. Lizz Wright, Fire
10. All the Music on PChats (CapCity and I picked each one)

OH I guess I could have put up a widget to play these songs...sorry. However my Blog Sister Capcity has one up!

NUTMEG: I used to be a music obsessive, which I got from my mother. Growing up I was exposed to everything from Billie Holiday to Leadbelly to Jefferson Airplane to Mahler to Jean Ritchie (who wrote folk ballads in the West Virginia coaltown style). There are really only two genres I don't like other than Muzak (tm): R & B and "Smooth Jazz."

My posts have always been heavy on early Ice Cube for a very obvious reason. There really hasn't been a rapper as overtly political since and to be able rhyme that way on those themes with that mellifluous Texas/SoCal accent makes that body of work so remarkable. The only one comparable for me in that regard is Nas whose politics are perhaps more traditionally European-left and doesn't have Cube's voice but made up for it with outrageous musical ability.

NWA and Ice Cube especially opened my mind to rap in the way Johnny Cash opened my mind to Country & Western. Alas, Cube's work has suffered for other interests but the first 5 are masterpieces. So far only Ice Cube and Eminem have been able to do one very special thing: rap with the opposite of ego -- everything is about fuckups, errors of judgement, frustration, misplaced rage, regrets and dreams unfulfilled. They're the Walt Whitman and Randall Jarrell of our generation but we're too caught up in the moment to notice.

Oddly, growing up in NYC I had an early appreciation of Afrika Bambataa but Run-DMC and native-tongue did nothing for me at all. I really lost all interest until NWA. Of course, they'll be teaching Wu-Tang Clan in about 7 different college departments 100 years from now.

And for what it's worth my favorite classical composer is Erik Satie.

What you don't like RB...not even the old school stuff...Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Temptations! OMG Come on I am not talking this new sexually explicit garbage. I am talking vintage Aretha Franklin, Robert Flack.

What no smooht jazz either...SHOOT!
I love smooth jazz.. you know the late Groover Washinton, Jr., Pieces of A Dream. Come on Kelso say it ain't so!

NUTMEG: Perhaps, it's a misnomer on my part. I love the "R & B" you're talking about although I'd use the terms "Motown," "Philly," "Soul," and "Disco" depending on date, time, place, etc. I'm kind of a nit about those genres, too. I kind of like Carl Carlton's version of "Everlasting Love" better.

Minnie Ripperton GOOD. Whitney Houston BAD.

The stuff that I hate is all of what's called "R & B" from say "Thriller" and Whitney Houston forward. I also don't much care for the Rap/R&B hybrids like Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray.

It's absolutely true about "smooth jazz," sorry to say. I grew up with my mom playing Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Art Blakey, Ben Webster, Bix, etc.,.. all the way through to Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders. I'm a purist.

Whew Kelso I was really worried! I hear you and I understand! Although give smooth jazz another look/listen...there's some nice talent out there! Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright and many others. I feel you on being a purist...you are like Wynton Marsalis no tolereance for the smooth stuff either! LOL!

Monica,
Oh I love your choices! Perfect!

Hey ON,
Yes I sort of got the idea form you...then I say MizR and Capcity! Nice of you to stop through!

Babz Rawls Ivy said...

Hey Torrance,

NOPE you are not exempt..Ipod is not required for listening to music! Do tell us what's playing in your ear!

CapCity said...

yea - 7 is so limiting... I LOVES SO MUCH MUSIC!! Johnny Mathis is one of my FAVES! whew! ....

Babz Rawls Ivy said...

Capcity,
Yes you are right! 7 is ridiculous to narrow choices to.

I love so many types of music that chosing is like asking which kid I like best! LOL!

Sista GP said...

I wanted to opt-out like Torrance, but I see that you are not going to let him escape, so I won't try.

No ipod and don't YouTube, but I just loaded the NIV Audio Bible New Testament on my BlackBerry. oops, I think it is called CrackBerry now, for my addiction to it.

Oh my! I tagged you too... doesn't matter either way, just shows how small this blog world really is.

I like your list, old school mixed with the new! Very cool.

Had a hard time narrowing my list to 7, but I got tagged so my list is up.

Babz Rawls Ivy said...

Hey Kay C.

Yes it is really ridiculous trying to keep your favorite songs to 7...that's why I did 10! LOL!

Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
