Do I Matter To Myself ?: Discerning My Commitments & Promises To Myself

"You have to matter to you, keep your promises to yourself, so you can trust yourself enough to live your dreams." Coach Julianna... excerpt from Mastin Kipp's post over at the The Daily Love
(If you haven't discovered The Daily Love run over right now and immerse yourself)

I was dragging my feet about reading the latest post from The Daily Love, for no other reason other than I wanted to wallow in my bullshit a bit longer. I rolled over in my bed this morning and reached for my iphone to check my emails (after my morning prayers of course). I was feeling very spiritual so I thought I would stay in that vibe and read up on all the spiritual & motivational stuff I get emailed on a daily basis.  As I read this particular post I was immediately blown away and had to sit up and re-read the post.

There are promises and commitments that you COULD make to yourself, but you don't. And you don't keep them because you don't value your dreams. But, if there was a financial incentive, most of us would probably be able to bust through the b/s beliefs we have that hold us back from our dreams. SHIT! This is God talking directly to me.  I am not surprised by that (God is always talking to me), what does surprise me is the clarity of the message... the absolute right message that address my funk!

WOW!!!!!  One more time:

There are promises and commitments that you COULD make to yourself, but you don't. And you don't keep them because you don't value your dreams. But, if there was a financial incentive, most of us would probably be able to bust through the b/s beliefs we have that hold us back from our dreams.

Is that true?  Why yes it is. And here's more....  We've told ourselves SO many excuses that we no longer trust ourselves. So part of living our dreams, part of taking your power back, part of earning freedom is trusting yourself. So what are the promises you are making to yourself and breaking? And what is the long-term effect of not keeping your word to yourself?

Damn.  God is right there.  Speaking. God is speaking very clearly to me.

One of the secrets to FULFILLMENT AND HAPPINESS is embracing short-term pain to produce long-term pleasure. This means keeping promises to yourself, so you can feel better about yourself, so you trust yourself, so you can show up to yourself and BELIEVE in yourself, so you have the POWER to make your dreams come true!

So now that I know that I know....

IT''S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: LIFE LESSONS

I believe that life is full of lessons. Some repetitive and some completely what I need at that moment to move me forward. If I am stubborn and unyielding I am destined to repeat the lesson until duh I get it! Sometimes the lessons are painful...like a knife to the heart. My divorce was like that. The relationship ended. But it hasn't ended really. I mean we are still in each other's life because we have children. So the romantic part has ended but the parental role remains.

Is anything really over? Yes. But some things remain. They remain because we have to grow better in our humanity, and we have to learn love. When one relationships is over and done it does not mean every relationship in your life ends. Nor does it mean you will never get another loveship. Now if you do not grow and look at your role in the demise of the relationship. Guess what? You will get the same relationship again until you learn the lesson. Sometimes you do things right and the lesson is saying you are doing things right with the wrong mate.

Life lessons are maps to move us forward. To get us to be in the moment. To enjoy the here and now. And to see who we fully are.

I hold no illusions about who I am. I maybe a queen, but I am no princess. I have weathered storms. I have loved. I have learned some lessons that got me right here right now. I am in love with the woman I am. I know the lessons in front of me are teaching me how to be more of myself in the grandest way.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY:MY PRAYERFUL LIFE

God answers sharp and sudden on some prayers, and thrusts the thing we have prayed for in our face, a gauntlet with a gift in it.
...Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

I saw this over at my favorite artisan Sister, The Artist In Me. When I saw it I knew instantly that God was talking to me...directly. I needed that message, that verse. It got me thinking about my prayerful life. It got me thinking about my life in this moment. I can feel the greatness all around me. I can feel the warmth of love and kindness and joy. I feel it. I feel it in all my interactions with people. I feel it in my telephone conversations, I feel it in my blog community. My prayers are answered. Are being answered. There is joy and peace and laughter. Deep, rich and full laughter. I caught myself the other day on the phone with My Crush and I was laughing a deep throaty laughter. My prayers have been answered...I am laughing again.

My prayers are not negotiations with God. I simply ask for the path to be illuminated further. I ask for stillness, I ask for clarity in my decision making. I ask to recognize love that IS. My prayers are sacred and personal. I ask for others that they may find love, peace, joy and laughter.

I am in this moment fully aware that my prayers are answered. My prayers are being answered.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: JAMAL'S KISS

I had a childhood friend named Jamal D. who lived a few doors down from me. He is perhaps a year or two older than me. We have been friends all of our lives. I grow up with him crushing on me in the biggest way. He was always respectful and very well behaved. He did however worship the ground that I walked on. I mean everyday he would sit in his front window and wait for me to pass. Sometimes he would be waiting outside to walk me to my door. When he graduated HS he went off to college, Coppin State. I went off to College the next year. We always stayed in touch by writing and calling each other. We even made a pledge to be friends for ever and ever.

My first Summer back from school we both were home at the same time. That's when it happened. He came by our house to drop in to visit. We were sitting on the couch in the living room talking about sororities and fraternities and college life in general. In one bold move he sweeps me into his arms and kisses me. I mean it was like 1 million bolts of electricity surging through my body. It truly was an out of body experience. I was stunned. I was overwhelmed. I never felt anything like it since.

We have always been close, so close that I once asked him to marry me. He declined, not because he didn't love me, but because he knew I needed to do other things---like finish my education. He was right. I haven't seen or heard from Jamal in years and I still think of that kiss. I swear as I remember it, it is still jolting. I swear I was looking for that kiss for years on the lips of different men and to no avail. Even when I did get married, I still longed for that kiss. That knock your socks off, curl your toes kiss.

So kissing is a big deal to me. Because I once had a kiss so sweet, so intense that it changed my life. So Prince Charming might be looking for some chick who could rock a glass slipper...I am however, looking for lips that can deliver the ultimate kiss!

27. Make a quilt

30. Take an art class (paint, pottery, etc)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KHALIL!

Today Khalil turned 7! He is so excited. He got up singing Happy Birthday to himself. I am making his favorite dinner, collard greens, 0ven-fried chicken, rice and peas. Our tradition for the children is to let them bake their own birthday cake with proper supervision of course. This year Khalil wants a red cake with red frosting--I think it has a lot to do with Power Rangers. Last year it was a blue cake with blue frosting...the Blues Clues phase. I have said no to black cake and black frosting unless of course it's Halloween and even then I am not so sure. Anyway they love this tradition. We did store bought cakes last year, because I had a lot going on and couldn't focus. They all let me know they did not like that and have reminded me everyday since that they wanted to go back to making their cakes! OK fine with me I love traditions!
My son is beautiful. He is resilient, smart, kind, funny and BEAUTIFUL!

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: THE LOVE LIST 64-66

I had no idea when I started the Love List 15 days ago, that folks would take to it. Men and women alike. Mind you I have gotten more private emails about my Love List than I can share. I have gotten quirky marriage proposals...that I said no to... but was flattered nonetheless. I've gotten suggestions...which I have taken. And folks have asked if they could copy same...of course I said yes!

There is something very hopeful about the Love List. It is magical and romantic and common sensible all at the same time. It feels like the most perfect thing to do, but we never do. At least I've never done it. Each morning I get up and I think about what the Love List ought to say and then like magic the suggestions show up. Things that I have long forgotten about, or things that I believe are more than anyone could possibly be. But so what! It is all about the grandest of possibilities.

The Love List may bear out my next "True Love" I am convinced that it will. Maybe not at the end of March, or at the end of the year. It may well be that my "True Love" is in front of me or far away from me. The thing that I love about it is that I get to dream and imagine and wish and lay out in a very thoughtful way a great many qualities I find attractive in myself and in someone else. I am laying out myself in this Love List and that is amazing.

The Love List 64-66

  • 64. When its that Time of the Month, he will keep me in dairy-free chocolates and wine!
  • 65. Will wrangle the children while I sleep in every once in a while.
  • 66. Will let me cater Boys Night In sometimes. I know this is sacred, but I could really set it up beautifully and keep it all manly-man of course.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: THE LOVE LIST 44-46 AND FLU UPDATE

The flu update--Gregory is going down for the count....AAARGH! Margeaux is still sick and held up in my bed and Me, I am the mother...no rest for the weary.

The Love List 44-46

When I started the Love List, I purposely did not want to list physical attributes. I wanted content of character to reign supreme. But I do have some physical preferences. It's not that I don't notice physically attractive men...I absolutely do! however, looks are fleeting and they do not tell you anything at all about a person's core values.

44. Takes care of teeth.

45. Long hair/dreds/afro/braids. I love long hair on a man. Now mind you, Men with bald heads, short hair are just as fine too! I am partial to men with long hair.

46. Tall. I am 5'8" in my bare feet so if I put on heels I am easily 6" tall. Again I am not ruling out brothers who are 5'7"

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: BEING TRUTHFULL AND LOVE LIST 6-10

What do you do if you find out a person you were crushing on turns out not to be that person he represented himself to be? Do you call them out? Do you quietly disappear from their lives without explanation? Do you curse them out? What?

I suppose people have to live their lives according to their own ethical codes. And perhaps they feel justified in hiding behind another persona. Maybe their "real life" commitments are overwhelming and they need an escape. Maybe they are trying on a new lifestyle and want to do so from a very private place. Or maybe they are living in fear and can't see a life of authentic happiness and they choose to create this fake universe. Is it fair to drag anyone there with you? And does that also mean that your interactions with people are also false, since you made them under false pretenses?

I know everyone will not share their lives as I have done. I am suspending judgement. So I am leaving this alone with the understanding that I do not hold any power over anyone. All I can do is handle me. I choose transparency and authenticity and truth. I choose Love over Fear.

The Love List 6-10
  • 6. Honesty. commitment to truth even if it hurts.
  • 7. Integrity. must have a code of ethics to live by.
  • 8. God Consciousness. must believe in a higher power. doesn't matter which higher power. Buddhist/Christian/Muslim/Voodoo Priest/Shaman/Witch Doctor/Monk/Rastafarian/etc.
  • 9. Employed. Can work as anything as long as it does not cause either of us to go to jail. He will know that what he does for money does not determine his self-worth. What he does for money does not define him.
  • 10. Conscious Thinker. Have some thought about the world. Reads and seeks information. Is concerned about life everywhere. Is a lover of freedom for all.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: LOVE & PASSION POEM #24

This morning I am deliciously happy. My Sister-friend JB is back from vacation! She stopped in last night for a good long chat and I am feeling like my universe is back in alignment...I missed her...terribly!
I am happy about other things too, but it's too early to chat about. However, I will say someone has captured my attention in a very intellectually sexy way--a man with a fine mind and a world vision and a loving spirit. I mean I am crushing on someone and I think he maybe crushing on me...so we shall see.

Pearl Cleage
Secret Life
(for Zaron)

we have a secret life,
you and i.
a life between the darkness
and the light
with your mouth on my,
my mouth on your...

we have a secret life
that binds us
and blinds us
and finds us gasping
and giggling
and grasping
at a way to stop time.

we have a secret life,
a movie in my mind
that flashes when they ask me
what i see in you.
what can i do?
how can i tell them
it's your mouth on my,
my mouth on your...

so don't even try.
i know the strength of secrets
is only in their keeping
and the beauty of the love
is always in the seeking
of that moment nothing matters
but that moment nothing matters.

we have a secret life,
a life between
the darkness and the light,
that keeps the world at bay
makes it all alright.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: DEACON?...YIKES! YES THAT WOULD BE ME AND POEM #17

A few weeks ago I was approached by my Church to become a Deacon. I was shocked! SHOCKED, STUNNED, AFRAID. When I got the call, it started with "We think you are an amazing woman. We would be honored if you joined us as part of the leadership of the Church" I couldn't believe it. I kept saying: you know this is me? The scandalous and infamous me, right? My Minister reminded me that God Has ALREADY forgiven you, why can't YOU! So I accepted. Yesterday was the Deacon's retreat, there are about 12 of us. It was one of the best days ever. I was so relaxed and so at home and I could feel my spirit singing all day. And after Friday night's crash and burn, Saturday morning was the rainbow. I felt amazingly peaceful and purposeful.

I came home filled with joy. I thanked my estranged husband for taking care of the beanie beans, bid him farewell and took the children out for the remainder of the afternoon. We went to Target, the craft store and then to the bookstore. I was specifically looking for a new bible, the one I have is the one I was given in 1973 when I was baptized in the pentecostal church...yep I need a new bible. Now over the years I have been given bibles--like from college graduation--I went to a HBCU so that is standard practice...but I digress. I picked-up Anne Lamont Bird by Bird and The Message//Remix: Solo and a beautiful journal---I am always buying beautiful journals. I didn't find a bible. I've not talked about my faith specifically, it is very private to me. I am not a pentecostal member, have not been since I was a kid. I am a member of United Church of Christ...you know that very liberal church that Obama is a member of. I have been thinking of going to the Divinity school here. My neighbor is the Dean. I met with them well before I was elected to office and when I was elected I sort of put it away. Then while I was away serving my 29 day sentence, I thought of it again. But did nothing about it. There are a whole series of events that happened, bringing me closer to applying to the Divinity school...becoming a deacon is one such example. There are others. My whole life has been one burning bush after another. So I am listening to God's call and I guess God is like...FINALLY.

Oh and did I mention there were 2 dozen RED roses waiting for me on Saturday when I arrived home with a little I love you balloon! A kind and caring soul wanted me to know that I was loved and to keep my head up. Hey, if anybody is looking for me, I will be on cloud 9 all day!

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: SEASON OF LENTEN AND LOVE & PASSION POEM #10

I love the season of Lent. We are reading from the Psalms and I love it. It fits right into my mood of Love and Passion in Poetry. What can be more passionate than the Psalms and we all know the Bible is all about LOVE! This is a good mood for me. I like feeling romantic and optimistic and hopeful and happy. I have surrounded myself with caring loving, people. I have long standing friendships that are are to me the air that I breathe. I 've not worried over too much, which for me is no easy feat. And I have changed my mind about my life and my expectations and to that end my world is changing..for the best.

Today I have chosen a Traditonal Ethopian Prayer:
"BE FOR US A MOON OF JOY"

May you be for us a moon of joy and happiness.
Let the young become strong and the grown man
maintain his strength, the pregnant woman delivered
and the woman who has given birth suckle her child.
Let the stranger come to the end of his journey and those
who remain at home dwell safely in their houses. Let
the flocks that go to feed in the pastures return happily. May
you be a moon of harvest and of calves. May you be a
moon of restoration and of good health.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: LOVE, SEX AND HOW TO GO ABOUT GETTING BOTH

(SIGH) So, I am admitting it. I am in the mood for love. Actually sex. But how? with whom? and when? (Sigh) If it was just me I could deal but I was over at Ndelible where she has a post: I Want Sex. Now if you aren't moved by the post, then the picture of the nude male photo is enough...and I don't care who you are or your sexual preference--that photo is HOT...but I digress. So she is lamenting what's on my mind (sigh). Then I hop over to Torrence Stephens bka All-Mi-T who's post A Penchant 4 Commitment is so moving and so beautiful that he has single handed restored my faith in Brothers who love supreme. And if none of that isn't enough Sojourner G has crafted an arsenal of love lost/love found/ love is God poetry, that so get under my skin that I can't stand it. I find them all to be, well, haunting. I hate to even mention all the time I spend over at Bloggersdelight2write all that delicious Grown Folks poetry and before I can settle in to read the latest posts I have the nerve to click on their 2 Make U Groove --all that old school music and I always start with Prince's Adore. So what's a Grown Woman to do? (SIGH)

My sister-friend JB suggests a cup of tea...short for sex toys--don't ask. Yes of course I say. Why I have a small reliable stash of toys that I ...well you know. But still...(SIGH) having a cup of tea is lovely, but it's the weight I need. The weight of someone playing moon to my stars--you know what I mean. Hey we're all Grown folks aren't we. Yes of course. When I am unusually focused on all things sex, sweat and more sex, I tip on over to Bad Bad Girl for some erotic reading--besides she has a killer blogroll. Yep, I know my freak flag is showing a bit, but I am a Grown Woman with NEEDS! DESIRES and FANTASIES! (SIGH).

Anyway, I am thinking about this and praying about this. I suspect Mr. Right-For-Me will show up sometime or another. IN the meantime, I am going to add a label here just so that I can talk about this from time to time.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: CHAMPAGNE FOR NO GOOD REASON OTHER THAN...WELL I LIKE IT AND OTHER MUNDANE MUSINGS

I am in a funky mood. Not bad or sad or blue...FUNKY. You know like feeling out of sorts but not unhappy about it. So what do I do, well I open a bottle of champagne and drink. As my Sister Lo reminds me--I am one of the few people she knows that actually loves drinking champagne. She's right..I do! So back to my funky mood--hmm. I have decided that if someone asks me out on a date, that I am going! Weeks ago this revelation would have been unheard of. But then that was last year. So I am open to whatever the universe has in store. Yes, I still feel married and I am not talking about multiple sex partners or sex at all for that matter. But if some interesting man asks me out for coffee or tea or drinks, I may say yes. I am not a widow. My estranged husband left me and has been on a date(s). His dating isn't my motivation--well not solely, maybe 23% the remaining 77% reasons are because I love life and I want to laugh and flirt and have deep moody discussions about politics and Jazz and wine and God. I want to look at a man and have him look at me with mystery and intrigue. I want romance and witty repartee. So maybe my funky mood is really a itch that needs scratching---ah that would be metaphorically and not literally speaking. So it's Jazz Sunday and I am drinking champagne and listening to love songs on XM satellite radio and the kids are glued to TV and watching the clock for their bedtimes, Margeaux and Khalil 7:30pm, Gregory 8:30 and Briana 9:30--because she and I love the Amazing Race--and it's the only late night she gets on a school night...but I digress. The thing about being a fully grown woman is that I make and play by my own rules. I am the boss of me! So cheers to the funky mood and the possibility of a date.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: I AM DOING ALL MY OWN COOKING

I am cooking everything myself this year for Christmas dinner. For the past 10 years I have catered my holiday dinners. I did this not because I can't cook, quite the contrary, I am a chef by trade. I am a formally trained chef. I catered holiday dinners because I hated being stuck in the kitchen while everyone else was having a good time. I catered holiday dinners because I hated being exhausted with all the preparation, planning and shopping for EVERYTHING by myself. It just made sense to pick-up items fully prepared from Restaurants that I loved to dine at. So my now-estranged husband and I would make a menu and order. I was happy, he was happy, our friends and family were happy.

Usher in sweeping change; reversal of fortunes; limited resources--ah make that no resources. I am back to prepping and planning and preparing food...and I am loving it. Let me make it clear, I do not expect to take this on every year. But this year I am. Not because I am totally broke--because I am, but mainly because there is a sense of divinity in making a meal and sharing with loved ones. My friends are amazed and anxious to see what happens. Yes, they know I have skills, but a full Christmas feast...well that is another story. I am ready. I created a budget, I have poured over countless cookbooks at my house and online. I have narrowed it down and created a menu. I shopped for the freshest ingredients and have begun the prepping. Even my kids are fascinated with my focus--they are ready to help and I am going to let them.

So here is my menu:
Roasted Turkey, stuffed with apples, garlic, thyme, oranges and onions,
Jazz Stuffing--not quite traditional, but not haute cuisine either,
Potato and Sweet Potato Torte
Potato Gallette
Sauteed Collard Greens
North African Spice Carrots
Mediterranean Herb Green Salad
Vegan Baked Macaroni and Cheez---this is made without cheese--it is delicious!
Vegan red velvet cupcakes for dessert

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: SISTER-FRIEND JOY

JB is my new Sister-Friend! I actually sort of knew her from church. I mean I saw her every Sunday for a few years, we were polite to each other and often would talk briefly about raising children. Nothing earth shattering, nothing that would make us pay any attention to the other. But something divine happened, the first Sunday on my release from Danbury Federal Prison Camp, we saw each other at Church and she greeted me joyfully and somehow we got onto the subject of blogging and entreprenuerism. WELL! we had a lot in common and not just blogging. Turns out she is in the process of divorcing too. So we started having lunch on Tuesdays to sit and talk and support each other. We take turns preparing lush meals with real silverware and dishes and fancy glasses-- the works! She is amazing, well accomplished, super smart---like intellectually smart and gorgeous and funny. Now I know many of my friends do not want to appear in my blog--they do not want their business all over the Internet--My friend Ron has already smacked me around about this and he doesn't care that I have changed his name...but I digress. Anyway my Sister-friend JB has added a level of support and comfort that I did not expect or see coming. Tuesdays with her has made my marriage-is-ending moments more than bearable. She has added another voice of reason and common sense to the choir that is my network of beautiful "True Love" friends. My marriage ending is unbearably painful, I mean PAINFUL! So her sage advice always carries me until the next Tuesday and before I knew it, I have gotten through a month of Tuesdays! This is truly the season of wonder, mystery and JOY!

"You can't depend on someone with a broken compass to chart your course" JB.
Amen.

IT'S ALWAYS JAZZ SUNDAY: I AM MY OWN BEST SUPPORT

My son Gregory got up this morning sick. I mean throwing up sick...YUCK! Today is Sunday, they sing in their church choir and it's "Stone Soup" Sunday. We aren't going. I called their father to see if he could come over and sit with Gregory while I took the other 3 to Church. He says OK but can I be back by 12 noon--he has something to do. Stone Soup doesn't start until 11:30 am. I am annoyed. He knew today was special, but of course what he has going on ALWAYS trumps what is best for OUR children. So my brother--who is always there for me and the kids said he would come at 11:00 am to relieve their father. My Brother has no problem dropping whatever he has going to take on my kids--each and every time I have been in need of childcare he has raced to the plate and stepped up. Then I just decided , forget it. I will stay home, we all will stay home. I am tired of bending to their Father's shit. He lives 15 minutes away and can't seem to come see them on a regular basis. He has a cellphone and can't seem to call them. Last week I told him this was last week I would hunt him down to talk to his kids. I am done trying to hold it down for him. Trying to explain his behaviour. I am done trying to make this work for him rather than for the kids. Sure he loves them, but talk is CHEAP! Maybe it's unfair to ask him to drop his plans for the sake of his child. But I do it EVERY TIME! And being late is different than not doing something at all.

I am taking a breath. I am refocusing my energy and redirecting my thoughts.

I am not giving this anymore energy. I am letting this go and I am not allowing this negative chatter to take residence in my heart and mind. In this moment I realize that it's not about being right or being the better parent. I am kicking my ego to the curb. I will do what needs to be done, joyfully and happily. My focus is my love for my children and my new found independence. I know I am on the right track because this morning was the first snow. I was dreading snow, but seeing it this morning warmed my heart and put a smile on my face. God is working for me. So my holiday music is playing in the background, Gregory is tucked into bed with a bucket nearby, Margeaux and Khalil are watching TV and Briana is reading in her newly cleaned room. Talk about a good day. It doesn't get any better than this. This is joy.
